Plymouth Gin is delicious. Moreover it’s unique. It’s also iconic. So an exhibition that captures its story is rather welcome. From Plymouth to the World – the Voyage of Plymouth Gin from Birth to Legend has just opened at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery and we took a sneak peak.

The new exhibition takes a look at over 200 years of Plymouth Gin history and its very special relationship with the city from which it takes its name. As one of the key British trading ports, 1793 saw the arrival of new exotic spices, fruits and teas, inspiring Plymouth resident Thomas Coates to create Plymouth Gin. More than 220 years later its still made to the same recipe with its distinctive botanicals and is still produced at Black Friars Distillery (the site where the Pilgrim Fathers stayed before sailing for the new world as if you didn’t know). Amongst the pieces on display in the exhibition are a collection of historic objects from the Plymouth Gin archive, including the original 1697 lease for the distillery and an early copy of The Savoy Cocktail book featuring a staggering amount of cocktails calling specifically for Plymouth Gin.

From Plymouth to the World – The Voyage of Plymouth Gin from Birth to Legend is free to visit and runs until the end of October before touring the world. While you’re down in Plymouth we suggest getting the full Plymouth Gin experience with a visit to the nearby Black Friars Distillery. There, that’s a summer day out sorted.
