Alistair Reynolds

The lowdown

Alistair Reynolds is 28. He started his bartending career in Nottingham nine years ago and his since worked at Haus Bar in Bristol and Pollen Street Social in London before moving to Hawksmoor Guildhall.  Alistair goes through to the World Class UK 2012 Finals with his drink inspired by ladies, Lady’s Touch.

What does the World Class competition mean to you?

It means I get to test myself against some of the best bartenders from around the world. It also means that the industry is becoming more and more recognised globally and it is a chance to celebrate what different cultures can offer.

What is your earliest cocktail memory?

Making my first Mojito or mixing a giant punch bowl at a friend’s birthday.

Did you choose the profession or did it choose you?

I guess both as I fell in love with bartending during university.

How do you think bartending is regarded as a career?

Amongst peers, very highly. I think it’s up to us to show the rest of the world our side to life.

If drink hadn’t entered the equation, what would you like to think you’d be doing now?

Flying planes in the RAF. That was always a big dream for me.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Meeting new people and learning more and more each day. Also what a common language bartending is around the globe.

And the hardest?

Making as much time as possible for friends and family.

Who’s the most memorable person you’ve ever created a cocktail for? Who was it, what was it and why does it stand out for you?

My dad. I think it was a twist on a Margarita. I think he then really understood what it is I do and why I love it so much.

Who’s your favourite cocktail drinker and why?

Lord Byron. Firstly he lived in Nottingham, my home town and secondly, he described drink so well.

What’s the most valuable piece of advice you picked up at the World Class Forum?

How lucky we are to have all these products readily available to us as pointed out by Jim Meehan.

What’s your favourite cocktail:

a) to mix?

b) to drink?

c) on your menu?

Sinking Spritz.

List three ingredients you’d put in a cocktail to sum up the facets of your personality .

1. Rum – as it’s fun and diverse
2. Campari – because it represents passion
3. Apricot – because it works well with the other two

The recipe that got him through:

Lady’s Touch

45ml Ron Zacapa
15ml Manzanilla Sherry
7ml Campari
3ml Cacao Blanc

Stir all ingredients over ice and serve in a chilled cocktail glass with a grapefruit twist.
