After the crazy old week we’ve had here in Blighty, it’s good to have something to celebrate. Monday 4th July is Independence Day and yes, we know it’s a US holiday but that doesn’t mean we can’t raise our glasses to the spirit of independence. And what better way than with a cocktail made with whiskey born and raised in the USA?
In the four days leading up to the Fourth of July we’ll be highlighting four very special drinks created by four very special bartenders right here in London. They’ll each be using their favourite whiskey to make a cocktail that you whizz up at home or try in their bars. Today’s pick: Tiarnan O’Gara, Bar Manager at the Blind Pig.
Which whiskey did you choose for your Independence Day cocktail and why?
I’ve gone for Woodford Reserve because of the family history behind the distillery. I love the taste but I was also drawn to it as it features in lots of American celebrations, particularly the Kentucky Derby, the inspiration for my cocktail.
What independent touch have you added to your drink?
Essentially, it’s a Buck – a long, refreshing drink particularly suited to summer. I’ve given it an independent touch by adding Cynar, an artichoke-based liqueur for a touch of bitterness that you don’t get from bourbon, it pairs really well with the truffle honey. Try it, it’s delicious!
