Trains, planes and automobiles, we’re bigging up all modes of transport in our 28th – count them, 28th issue. More specifically we’re looking at travel and the many ways it has shaped how and what we drink.
Cover composition by Ed Fairburn
Our favourite drinks historians Jared Brown and Anistatia Miller begin the journey by shining a light on the many bartenders who, as far back as the 19th century traversed the world to hone their considerable skills. We’re talking the likes of Jerry Thomas, Trader Vic Bergeron and Harry ‘The Dean’ Johnson. That’s the history side of things. Moving on to present times we get the lowdown from five globetrotting drinks professionals about how travel impacts their work and pick up some invaluable tips along the way. Thank you Lauren Mote, Ivano Tonutti, Tess Posthumus and Mike Ryan and an extra-special gracias to Dickie Cullimore for the travel hacks highlighted throughout the entire magazine – don’t leave home without reading them.
Cocktails on the travel-inspired menu at Trickdog, San Francisco
Adventure and exploration has played a big part in drinks menus too, as Jane Ryan finds as she checks out how bars like Pouring Ribbons, Trick Dog, Mr Fogg’s and Oriole have explored the theme. She also takes a look at the lure of Duty Free (aka the sixth continent), while Rebecca Milford checks in to the airport lounges to see who offers what on the cocktail front.
Then it’s off to the US where we caught up with Gn Chan and his mobile cocktail bus (top), before stopping off to talk to brothers Daniel and Joe Schofield (International Bartender of the Year no less) about the joys of the guest shift.
