Ocho Tequila, Cocktail Emporiums, Gin and Notting Hill Carnival

ByThe Cocktail Lovers

Things we’re looking forward to this week

The Worship Street Whistling Shop

For people who didn’t really ‘get’ tequila, we seem to be embracing it big time. Particularly the smooth, rich taste of Ocho. Our week gets off to a cracking start with a tasting of the premium single estate Ocho at Cafe Pacifico, Covent Garden. (Not that we really need one as we’re already huge fans but any opportunity to learn a bit more about it is always welcome). Then it’s a tot or two of Greenall’s, Bloom and Berkeley Square gins at Graphic Bar and that’s Monday sorted…

Tuesday should be fun for lots of reasons that we won’t go into here but let’s just say it involves meeting some jolly nice people and talking about drinks. The evening will be spent in the cosy confines of the Jub Jub bar at Callooh Callay sampling more gin at the Plymouth Martini Masterclass…

We were gutted to miss out on an invite to the brand new Cocktail Emporium at the Worship Street Whistling Shop last week. But guess what? We’re going this week instead. Yay! It’ll be jolly exciting to see just how the team manages to engage all of the senses in what is billed as the world’s first multi-sensory experience. We’re told to expect video mapping, wonderful tastes adaptive lighting and authentic aromas specially created by perfumeurs as we’re guided through an interactive journey retelling the history of rum…

The Bank Holiday weekend starts early with drinks at The Dorchester on Thursday and a tasting of the new Astor Hip Flask at Good Godfrey’s on Friday. Then the rest of the weekend is all about the Carnival, with rum cocktails at home followed by a Carnival party on Sunday at one of our new faves, The Shop in Kensal Rise…

Words to the wise

Rum punch, a favourite at the Notting Hill Carnival, is nothing new. It’s been around since the first decade of the eighteenth century. Back then it was the fashionable drink on London’s literary scene and, according to Dave Broom in his The Complete Bartender’s Guide, “if there had been such things as yuppies in those days they would have been rum drinkers.”
