The Old Fashioned has been around since the late 1800s and is one of those cocktails that seem to invite all sorts of controversy. Bourbon or blended whisky, muddled or not muddled, soda or water or neither.
Our tips:
We prefer to muddle as it produces more depth in the flavour. Don’t use your fine crystal as muddling can leave a lasting impression. We recommend superfine sugar rather than sugar cubes as the muddling is energetic enough work as it is. A dash of water too helps to combine everything. Lastly, don’t rush the mixing of an Old Fashioned – it’s a labour of love that will reward you with a sublime drink.
Ingredients:
2 ½ ounces bourbon or blended whisky
1 teaspoon superfine sugar
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
2 orange slices
2 maraschino cherries
Water or soda water
Method:
In the bottom of an old-fashioned glass (or tumbler) muddle the sugar, bitters, one of the orange slices, one of the cherries and a splash of water or soda. Combine thoroughly then remove the orange rind. Add the bourbon or whisky, a few ice cubes and maybe another tiny splash of water or soda. Give it a final little to stir and garnish with the other orange slice and cherry.
