Ms S had never heard of Licor 43 until a chance encounter at Shaker School last year. Looking to break away from the usual base ingredients for sours, she took a chance and tried the contents of its bottle in her recipe. The drink was very agreeable indeed – different enough to be surprising but balanced enough not to be too much of a shocker on the old palate.
Since then she’s been meaning to try out its vanilla-ry goodness at home but in fairness, apart from seeing it once at Gerry’s in Old Compton Street, it’s not something you spot on in your average drinks outlet.
Which is probably the reason why distributors Wray & Nephew decided to hold a competition to find a UK Brand Ambassador to promote the drink. Considering it’s a leading premium liqueur in Spain, not much is known about the 43 ingredients that make up the secret recipe over here. That’s all set to change now that the nationwide search for UK Brand Ambassador is finally over. Joey Medrington from Tigerlily bar in Edinburgh took first prize and as well as a nice cheque for £4,000, he’ll be bigging up the beauty and versatility of Licor 43. Watch this space for recipes.
