In a nutshell
Imported Caribbean rum aimed at the masses, brought to life with exotic spices and clever packaging.
What They Say
Named after a sea beast of myth and legend, The Kraken Rum is strong, rich, black and smooth. It’s a spiced Caribbean rum aged and enriched with exotic spices including cinnamon, ginger and clove. Its ominous colour and striking Victorian flagon-style bottle is a reminder of the beast that lends the rum its name – the two glass handles mimic the very eyes of the Kraken itself.
What We Say:
The design of the bottle certainly makes it stand out from the rest, which is probably the reason why The Kraken was one of the most requested rums sampled at last week’s Drink Show Live. As an introduction to spiced rums it does a pretty decent job: delicate nuances of clove, cinnamon and vanilla tickle the nose while a cherry-like fruitiness engages the palate.
That creamy vanilla note works well in a simple rum and coke over ice – particularly when left for the flavours to make friends in the glass. The other suggested serve is the Perfect Storm (see recipe below). It’s perfectly agreeable and very easy to drink – the ginger beer adds a welcome complexity. It’s not something I’d order at the bar but that said, it comes into its own as a hassle-free, easy-drinking cocktail to serve up at home.
You certainly can’t ignore this product- the design of the bottle, the Victorianesque label and the black liquid inside. As for that black liquid itself… On the nose there’s a little warm and welcoming vanilla while the overall spiciness is quite gentle. The sense of warmth continues with the taste from a pleasing hint of brown sugar, then goes up another notch with some ginger in the finish. For a rum and coke the spice is there in the aroma but still quite gentle and in the taste it works well as a balance to the sweetness of the soft drink. In the recommended Perfect Storm it sits well with the ginger beer to give a nice bit of depth in the flavour, delivering a refreshing drink with a subtle kick in the finish. Throw in its single-minded marketing idea and this has every chance of taking off in bars.
The Kraken takes its name from the mythical sea monster – a feared 100ft squid which attacks ships and devours their crews.
