The Spirit Of Art By Giffard

ByThe Cocktail Lovers

Everyone likes a bit of history. Not the heavy, yawn-inducing stuff but the kind of facts and anecdotes that come in handy for pub quizzes or breaking the silence at the bar. Things like dropping into conversation that Emile Giffard changed his pharmacy into a distillery after the success of his first product, Menthe-Pastille. Or knowing that since 1885 when he created that refreshing minty liqueur, his company Giffard, is still in the hands of the same family.

And for those who don’t care a jot about the facts, there are the images – in Giffard’s case, a collection of poster advertisements created in the 19th and early 20th centuries by famous artists inclusing Ogé, Cappiello and Misti. The works are stunning – many have remained in the Giffard family for generations and were shown for the first time in an open-air exhibition during London Cocktail Week through to 18th October.
