GIN 1495 is the culmination of an extraordinary journey. From a 500 year old recipe to a limited edition launch, it is changing  the way we look at gin. For a select few it may also change the way they taste the spirit.

Earlier this year Philip Duff, international drinks expert, realised the culmination of a decade long journey by attempting to recreate the oldest known recipe for a recreational gin. Supported by EWG Spirits & Wine founder Jean-Sébastien Robicquet, he enlisted the help of Cocktail Historian Dave Wondrich to bring to life the 500 year old recipe. Later he also recruited Gaz Regan, Mixologist and Industry Guru, and Dave Broom, Spirits Writer, to add a further dimension to the recipe by creating a modern interpretation of the gin as well. We were lucky enough to join them as they developed GIN 1495.

Now this unique spirit has been launched in two expressions; Verbãtim, the original 1495 recipe, and Interprêtãtio, created to embody the original liquid but tempered for the contemporary palate. Packaged together under the name Limited Edition GIN 1495, the word ‘limited’ isn’t an exaggeration.  Just 100 of the packs have been produced. Moreover they won’t be going on sale either. Instead they are being generously gifted by EWG Spirits & Wine to gin institutions around the world including the Jenever Museum in Schiedam, Holland, Jenever Museum in Hasselt, Belgium and the Museum of the American Cocktail in New Orleans, USA.

GIN 1495

And you could own one too. In a unique auction a single pack containing both Verbãtim and Interprêtãtio can be yours. Not only does the winning bidder get to own a piece of liquid history, they’ll also be donating to a worthy charity as all proceeds go to The Benevolent, a charity to support members of the drinks community in times of need.

You could be toasting your good fortune with a 500 year old gin – good luck!

For full details of how to make your bid visit the Gin Guild Facebook here.

Bids must be received by 1st December 2014.
