We’re always on the lookout for anything to do with drinks – that goes for the conventional right through to the downright bonkers. Somewhere in middle sits the British Beer & Barley Spa Treatments at Rocco Forte’s Brown’s Hotel. Combining alcoholic beverage with a spot of essential pampering, now that’s our idea of pure perfection…
The beauty is, the three special treatments work whether you’re a beer lover or not. And at this time of year when many of us are detoxing, it’s rather nice to sneak in something spirituous whilst keeping our conscience firmly intact.
True to the menu’s title, the three treatments on offer are based on great British beers, in this case taken from the lipsmacking list at HIX at The Albemarle, the rather swanky restaurant upstairs. Add to that the special nourishing properties of Maris Otter barley from one of the last remaining floor maltsters in Blighty and you’ve got the recipe for some delicious five-star cosseting.

There’s a Pale Ale Pedicure (exfoliation, beer foot bath, pressure point massage, nourishing foot wrap, lick of varnish for the tootsies as you relax with a hot malt drink and barley snack); a Honey and Barley Facial (hot malt drink to start, thorough cleanse and tone, honey and barley mask, glass of St. Austell ale to finish) and a Blissful Barley Body Wrap (hot malt drink to start, barley exfoliant and body wrap, followed by glass of British beer and barley snack). Treatments last for 75-90 minutes.
“We leapt at the chance to work with Brown’s hotel to demonstrate the beauty of barley and the special flavours of our ancient Maris Otter variety,” says Jonathan Arnold of barley maltsters, Robin Appel. “And my wife is thrilled that instead of popping out with me to the pub, I will be able to join her for a beer-tinged massage as well.” Marriage guidance counsellors, take note.
