We’re not saying bartenders are show offs but most of the ones we know give the impression of supreme confidence. Which is one of the key attributes needed for fronting it out in a cocktail competition. Particularly one where the finalists will be chosen to appear on Spirits Network.
Spirits what you may be asking? Ah, allow us to give you the lowdown. Unless you’re in the US, you may not have heard of Spirits Network. But that’s about to change. A huge hit with American audiences since it launched in 2019, it’s the world’s first digital TV and mobile channel that allows viewers to buy premium, on-demand spirits as they watch some pretty fab alcohol-related content. Think QVC for drinks and you’ve got the right idea, and the good news is, it’s coming to Blighty!
To whet our appetites, NBTV Studios the company who produce the show, are hosting Spirits Network Presents, a week-long pop-up running 18-22 October as part of London Cocktail Month. As well as a bar and some pretty cool masterclasses, they’re inviting bartenders from across the UK to audition for the Shake Off.
The auditions
This is where the ‘show’ comes into the business of making damned tasty drinks. Once you’ve completed the application form (see below), you’ll be invited to attend one of the auditions taking place during the Spirits Network Presents pop-up at The Little Yellow Door in Notting Hill, London.
The process is simple enough, you’ll be asked to make a cocktail using ingredients from a fully stocked back bar as you dazzle the Spirits Network folk with your charm and personality.
The Shake Off
Sixteen bartenders will then be selected to go through to Shake Off, which will air in December and mark Spirits Network’s official launch in the UK.
If you make the cut, you’ll be asked to do what you do every day: serve top-quality drinks whilst you’re talking. The only difference is, instead of chatting to your guests or colleagues, you’ll be answering questions put to you by a panel of expert judges.
Throughout the series contestants will be tasked with creating a selection of serves, including creating their own versions of a classic cocktail and elevating a brand’s signature serve with their own twist. Judging will be based on colour, taste, smell, finish and presentation of each cocktail made over the three challenges.
The prize
Appearing on Spirits Network, obvs, but as well as that, there’s a cash prize and the title of Shake Off champion.
