The Opihr Global Competition gets under way in just a few days time when six very talented bartenders will be competing to be named The Spirit of Opihr 2019. Today we hear from another of the competitors.
David Mor
What’s the name of your bar and which country will you be representing?
My bar is called Bad Hunter and I’ll be representing the United States of America.
How long have you been a bartender?
I’ve been working in bars for three years, first at Cindy’s and now at Bad Hunter.
What’s the story with your Opihr cocktail?
The inspiration behind the cocktail was the idea of locality. I wanted to highlight ingredients in a composed drink that exemplify the different places I have called home. Born in Atlanta, the cocktail is lengthened with a homemade Georgian peach soda. Having been raised in Israel I utilised the Middle Eastern spice blend of za’atar to add complexity and depth. And finally, I used heirloom tomatoes grown on my family’s local farm. The drink is made to be fresh and is the ultimate representation of home for me.
Tell us a little about how Opihr gin works with the locally sourced ingredients in your cocktail
Opihr Gin has an incredible quality that allows for each flavorful ingredient in the cocktail to live its best life. With notes of spicy peppercorn, bright citrus and savory herbs the cocktail’s culinary foundation is brought to life with complexity and freshness. The Georgian peaches provide a natural, fresh sweetness to the drink, while the heirloom tomatoes bring acid, brightness and a herbaceousness that is tantalising. Finally, the za’atar tincture highlights the savory tones of the Opihr Gin while also providing a complex depth.
What are you most looking forward to at the global final in Venice?
I’m looking forward to meeting other bartenders from around the world that have a passion for creative drinks composition. I’m extremely excited to hear about their stories and the hospitality industry in each of their countries.
