How long have you been blogging for?

We started The Cocktail Lovers three years ago but in January 2011 we relaunched the site, gave up our jobs and decided to make it a viable business.

What motivated you to start The Cocktail Lovers?

We’re both writers: Gary was a former executive creative director at top companies like Saatchi & Saatchi and Leo Burnett as well as running his own agencies, while Sandrae edited magazines and worked on publications including The Daily Telegraph and the Sunday Mirror. We decided to combine our day jobs with our passion for London’s vibrant cocktail scene after friends kept asking us for details of the best bars in town and we realised we had more and more to say on the subject. At first we set out to write bar reviews but over time, The Cocktail Lovers has evolved into a lifestyle magazine format, covering product reviews, fashion for the cocktail hour, interviews with our favourite barmen and recipes for everything from the Chelsea Flower Show to the Royal Wedding. We like to cover things from a his and hers, enthusiasts perspective always going for a consumer angle.

Who is your average reader?

Anyone with an interest in cocktails, from people just discovering them to real fanatics, as well as bar owners and bartenders, aged from early 20s through to 50s. And because we cover topics from a male and female perspective, we have a fairly even split.

What is the best thing you’ve done that has been organised by a PR?

The Beefeater 24 Hour event takes some beating. It started off at Beefeater HQ where we got to assist Master Distiller Desmond Payne in the process of steeping the botanicals. After a fab Red Snapper cocktail we moved into the Beefeater private bar for a cocktail masterclass with Dan Warner, Dre Masso and Henry Besant. It was then off a Routemaster bus to the Golden Hind for fish and chips. Next by black cab to Tower Bridge for speed-boating on the Thames. It was now mid afternoon and time for our Blue Badge tour of Gin Lane territory. Then we boarded a bus to Whitechapel for The Jack the Ripper walking tour. On to Hawksmoor for punch from Nick Strangeway and a meaty dinner before heading over to the Tower of London by way of Karma Cabs for the Ceremony Of The Keys and a G&T with the Beefeaters in their private mess. Next we hit the Dorchester Bar before arriving at Punk for cocktails before a very early fry-up in Smithfield, a freshen up at The Sanderson Hotel, followed by a smart breakfast at Simpsons-on-the-Strand. Finally horse drawn carriages took us leisurely back to Beefeater HQ to collect our personalised bottles of gin which we had started 24 hours earlier. And, yes, we did the whole thing!

If you could take one food and drink item to a desert island, what would it be?

Sandrae: That’s a toughie: As much as I love gin, I’d probably take a Nebuchadnezzar of Champagne so I’d be in celebratory mode for a long time, and for food I’d go for an unlimited supply of roast chicken to eat hot or cold.

Gary: Fresh orange juice to add to Ms S’s champagne to start the day off. Food, bangers and mash.

What is you favourite bar in London?

Sandrae: For kicking back and relaxing: Callooh Callay in Shoreditch, for poshing up The Connaught.

Gary: Right now I particularly love London Cocktail Club and Hawksmoor Seven Dials.

If you could order any cocktail in the world, what would it be?

Sandrae: The perfect dry martini, served with love and a twist, simply because it’s a classic.

Gary: A classic Dry Martini made with gin and a twist. It has been my favourite as long as I can remember and it’s always the cocktail I return to.
